Diary

October 1st, 23:54

Bags are packed with everything I might need, and a toothbrush! Just time for a quick game (or two) on the computer before bed. Meeting the team at around 4:30pm tomorrow at the airport. I hope that Brian will understand my text's I'll be sending him to relay to everyone.

October 3rd,

Phone Text (Expanded into English) We have arrived! it was a good flight. I will send you more details later.

October 4th,

Phone Text (Expanded into English) Day 2 in South Africa. It's our first day in the township, and I'm finding that it is very differant to what I was expecting. It's incredibly run down, but the attitude of the people is very upbeat and friendly.
Please pray that God will open my eyes to his will.

October 5th,

Fairly easy day today been to Church which was an interesting experience with two different languages used to sing the songs. The real work starts tomorrow, when we go into the township and start work.

October 6th,

First day of real work. We went into the township for our first day of painting, day's on the beach etc.. It was really humbling to walk into a small pre-school that the Church here (Helderberg Christian Church) is financing and running to be greeted by about 40 or so small children about five or six years old with hugs and HUGE smiles!!!
The fact that they very rarely see white people (especially willing to spend time with them) with such openess and joy was incomprehensible.
Earlier in the day someone that was praying for me confirmed that God wants me out here for a reason.

Prayer points:That God would help me in the coming days to be moulded by him into who he wants me to be, and that I might be able to pick up some of the Xhosa language without too many problems. We are planning an outreach with children for Wednesday so please remember me in it. Thank-you for all the support guys.

October 9th

Hi guys, sorry I missed a couple of days, things have been pretty hectic over here.

Day 6. Over the last couple of days I have been very busy in helping to run two children's clubs one in the township of Lwandle and one in Macassar. The one in Maccasar had about sixty children in attendance and the one in Lwandle had about three hundred in attendance.

Today (Thursday) was a "normal" sort of day with worship and teaching from about 08:30. The teaching today was from two of the members in the Church here; one a "Coloured man" and one a "White man" they both told of their own experiences of growing up in an Apartheid ruled country. It was very challenging.

After the teaching and a tea break we went into the township of Lwandle where we were involved in painting the pre-school and doing some visits to the members of the Church who live in amongst the shacks and very small houses that are on the site. All of the people we visited were from the Xhosa speaking people of the township.

I have got a night off tonight so I will have an early night hopefully!!!

Prayer points: That I would know Gods direction in my life and that he will teach me to be like him more and more.

October 11th

Day off at last!!! We have been to see Table mountain in Cape Town with some terrific views, the cable car trip to the top is a bit hair raising as you seem to be heading into the mountain at one point.

We also went for a trip around Robben Island where Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were held prior to 1994. It was a very sobering experience to be shown the cellblocks and other parts of the Island, we were guided around the prison by an ex-inmate who served four years there. He showed us the cell where he was imprisoned and the one where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

Tomorrow I'm off to a cell church in one of the townships and then to Jubilee Church in Cape Town in the evening.

October 13th

Day 11: Another busy few days; On Sunday we visited Khanyisa Church which is a small Church in the township of Gugaletu, we experienced communion SA style which was really relaxed and nice, then in the afternoon we visited Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens which were full of colour then it rained with a big thunderstorm which was nice to watch from the foyer of the gardens, then in the evening we went to Jubilee Church in Cape town and enjoyed some really good worship and teaching.

Today we started as normal but during the worship I was broken by God in some of my attitudes. After this we went to Lwandle pre-school to carry on the practical work that was started last week, I was playing with the younger children and now know what a human climbing frame feels like at one point I had four children hanging from various parts of my body!!!! more of the same tomorrow(help).

Prayer Points: That God would continue to break me and mould me into who he wants me to be and that I would know where he wants me to be in him.

October 14th

Today was just one of those God days, you know the sort of thing I mean, Holy Spirit just breaks all the rules etc.... We had a couple of men come to day to speak about the Holy Spirit and they started prophesying over people I was proheysied over so watch this space for developments :)).

Today we had kids club in Maccasar with about forty or so children, we decided to have a talent show!!!! I managed to wangle my way onto the sound desk(phew) It was quite a hard time as we won't see these children again before we leave. Tomorrow we do our last kids club in Lwandle only God knows what he's got in store for us.

October 16th

Another couple of busy days have passed the kids club went really well and we had great fun playing the parts of school kids in a little drama. Today we had a few things to do these included helping to run a soup kitchen at a TB and HIV clinic in Lwandle and walking around a small township and playing games and evangelising with small children.
Tonight we went to a cell group in the Lwandle township, which has about 35 members that attend regularly(a small church in the UK) the worship was all in Xhosa so we tried to join in as well. The amazing joy that was in that room is undescribable. Anyway I'm off to bed another busy few days ahead

October 20th

The last few days have been quite hectic for me, on Thursday some of us went to a soup kitchen that provides food for people who are suffering from TB and HIV it was a real eye opener to see people who are Christians with TB and HIV and the way they look at life.

On Friday we had a day out at Grabouw where a previous life change team had been, it was amazing to see the level of faith there, they have a monthly bill of around R18,000 but only about R4,500 regular income yet they pay all the money out every month. Hows that for a miracle!!

On Saturday we went to watch whales in the sea off of Hermanus and then watch the rugby in a South African bar, on the return journey we stopped off and saw the penguin colony in one of the bays.

Yesterday we said our goodbyes and they prayed for us, it was hard I have made some really good friendships here.

We fly out tonight for home :( so see you all soon.
